Hatfield Peverel care home praised by the care quality commission

Hatfield Peverel Bupa Care Home in Chelmsford has been rated as ‘Good’ by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) following its latest inspection

The CQC’s latest report commended the home, rating it as ‘Good’ in all areas including safety, effectiveness, and its well-led service.

Hatfield Peverel, which provides personal and specialist dementia care for up to 68 people, was praised for the quality of care the well-trained staff provided and the managers’ ability to respond to emerging concerns quickly and thoroughly. The report gave a special mention to how staff support residents in the least restrictive way possible and with their best interests at heart.

The audit team, which includes one Inspector, a Nursing Advisor, and an Expert by Experience, spoke with residents, relatives, and members of staff about their experience of the care provided, as well as thoroughly reviewing individual care files and service procedures.

The findings detailed how the home was quick to resolve any concerns and that staff were well-trained in administering medicines in a safe and competent way, ensuring records were accurate and that consent way given by all residents before giving their medicine.

Where safeguarding is concerned, inspectors said people were well-protected from the risk of abuse and that staff were confident with policies to keep residents safe from harm.

One relative echoed this, commenting: “[My relative] says she feels safe, we have got to know the staff, they are all really nice, she feels comfortable with them.”

Another relative commented: "Any problem is always dealt with, staff are caring, and very good. I feel that the [care] home is well managed."

Not only were residents found to be cared for in a professional manner, but the home also prioritises individuals’ personal needs and family life, as it facilitates visiting without restriction, so relatives and loved ones can visit people in their rooms, in communal lounges, or in specially designated visiting areas.

The team at Hatfield Peverel is keen to involve relatives in decision making and care plans, providing loved ones an opportunity to input their thoughts regularly.

One relative said: "I have been to meetings and internal assessments, contacted and asked for my views, I chose to do this by phone."

Another relative told the inspectors: "They look at the care plan and we are invited to see them, medications are discussed and reviewed."

Inspectors observed that there are plenty of staff to meet the needs of all 63 residents currently living at Hatfield Peverel. The culture created by staff at the home received a particularly glowing review, describing it as positive, person-centered, open, inclusive, and empowering.

Anish Philip, Hatfield Peverel’s Deputy Manager, commented: “The whole team at Hatfield Peverel are absolutely thrilled with the outcome of the inspection. To be rated as ‘Good’ in all areas really reflects the hard work of our staff and I know it means a lot to our residents and their families to see that they are in such safe hands.”

Sean Curtin, Registered Nurse, has worked at Hatfield Peverel for one year. He commented: “It’s been fantastic working with all the staff and residents over my year at Hatfield Peverel, the rating to me is a reflection of all the hard work the staff put in to ensure our residents are happy and fulfilled in their daily lives.”
